A woman is drawing attention online after sharing what the “first thing” is that she does as soon as she starts her car.

Denise Marie, who owns a GMC Yukon Denali, posted a video on her TikTok profile explaining that every time she presses the start button, she immediately presses the “A” button so her car stops turning on and off every time she comes to a stop.

“Why does this (shut-off) button exist and why is it the only button that can’t stay off 24/7?”, she wrote in the text over the clip, which has already accumulated more than 9 million views.

This feature, which many people like but most dislike, is present in most modern vehicles and consists of a system that makes the car “shut off” automatically whenever the driver comes to a complete stop, including at traffic lights or in traffic.

When the driver steps on the accelerator again, the car restarts to continue its route. This tool, in theory, aims to save fuel by preventing the engine from staying on when the car isn’t moving.

Unfortunately, many drivers don’t like this feature. The first reason is simple: when the car turns off, the air conditioning and other useful functions also stop working. In addition, some say that the fuel savings provided by the system are so small that they don’t make up for the inconvenience.

Lastly, a portion of drivers believes in a theory that automakers adopted this technology to wear out starting components faster, creating a kind of “planned obsolescence.”

Regardless, the system can be deactivated by pressing the “A” button, which is located in different positions on the dashboard depending on the model. Even so, many drivers, including Denise, are frustrated that the system needs to be manually turned off every time the car is started.
